How is nuclear energy used to produce hydrogen?

Answer:  Besides the existing applications, nuclear power will be used through its very high temperature (around 1000°C) reactor from generation IV future reactors, still in project and the technology of splitting water into its hydrogen and oxygen constituents.

 

Background

There are three methods for using nuclear energy to produce hydrogen: electrolysis, high-temperature steam electrolysis and thermo-chemical water splitting cycles. This last method will utilize the very high temperature (around 1 000°C) heat from generation IV very high temperature nuclear reactors and the technology splitting water into its hydrogen and oxygen constituents.

The project is schedule for 2030 or more.
